Elizabeth May on art funding cuts

“…for some reason, they’ve [Conservative strategists] decided that cutting arts will win them votes and that’s the whole reason for these stupid cuts.”

  1. You obviously feel comfortable judging on behalf of everyone, which is garbage and which is art. Not my job. Not the job of any politician.

If it’s not the job of any politician, then why are we funding it?

“Funding for the arts” is a sly way of saying “more money for the CBC”. Guess who CBC’s going to give a free ride then?

Art is one of those things that quite frankly can sink or swim on its own merit.

  3. Not the job of politicians to decide what is art and what isn’t.

CBC is funded separately and has nothing to do with the programs that support artists.

It is really up to the public whether they’d like to have more art programs and artists working in their communities. If you want to encourage artistic output you help them make ends meet.

I can tell where you stand on this..

This is where we must agree to disagree.

I’m an artist myself, and the government gives me squat. That is as it should be as a completed piece is its own reward.

  5. A completed piece doesn’t always buy enough bread though, you must know lots of colleagues who have a really hard time making ends meet, it is surprising you aren’t more supportive.

Not everyone is as successful as yourself, obviously you have managed to support yourself with your art. Never say never though, you could find yourself pursuing a project where you will need to seek support in order to get through…

Successful artist? Me? Bwwaahh!! Ha! Ha! Hey, I appreciate the sentiment!

The last time I made money on my art was when I prostituted myself to make a “Bob Ross” style painting! Good Lord, the stains won’t wash off…I can’t get clean…

If someone wants to become a professional artist, they better get used to macaroni and cheese, not government handouts. That’s the path one must choose.

Not everybody gets to be an astronaut.
